Child Find & Special Education

“Child Find" Process
At Impact Public Schools, we believe that all scholars are able to succeed with the correct support.  We are deeply committed to providing this support.   Our schools use a process called "Child Find" to identify and evaluate any scholar with a suspected disability. Signs that a child may have a disability include difficulty meeting milestones in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Vision and hearing
  2. Speech or communication skills
  3. Motor control or coordination
  4. Behavior or social skills
  5. Intellectual or academic skills

If you are at all concerned that your scholar might have a disability, please reach out to any of the following people to support you in next steps:

  1. Your scholar’s teacher
  2. Your school’s administration team
  3. Trisha Shipman, Director of Special Education (tshipman@impactps.org)

All parents have the right to information about their child’s education in a language they understand. When your child enrolls in school, the school will ask you about the language you would like to use when communicating with the school. This helps your school identify your language needs so they can provide an interpreter or translated documents, free of charge.

The school will communicate with you—in your language—about your child’s education. Our communication platform, ParentSquare, translates into over 100 languages. In addition, families can request translated documents and a language interpreter for meetings and conversations.

You have the right to these services even if you speak some English and even if your child can speak or read in English. The school will communicate with you in your language about important information and opportunities for your child.

Meetings and conversations with teachers and school employees: When you talk with teachers or school employees, the school can always provide  an interpreter if you request one. This includes parent–teacher conferences, meetings about special education, or any other conversations about your child’s education. The interpreter might be in person or over the phone and might be school staff or an outside contractor.

Written information: All written communication from your school sent via ParentSquare can be translated by selecting your preferred language. If you need support with ParentSquare, please see your school’s front desk. If you receive documents from the school that is not in your language, please let the school know if you would like it translated in writing or explained orally to you in your language.

These are your rights! Under state and federal civil rights laws, you have the right to access information in your language.

Concerns and complaints - If you have concerns about the school’s interpretation or translation services—or if you were not offered an interpreter or translation you needed—you have several options.

  1.   Talk with your principal or a school employee you are comfortable with. A discussion with your school principal is often the best first step to address your concerns. Explain what happened, and let the principal know what they can do to help resolve the problem.
  2.   Talk with Impact Public Schools Language Access Coordinator. You can also contact our Language Access Coordinator to share your concerns. Please reach out to Stefan Sobiek at ssobiek@impactps.org
  3.   Ask for help resolving your concerns. You can also contact these agencies for more information about your rights or for assistance to resolve your concerns.

  1.   You can file a complaint. To file a complaint, explain what happened in writing—in any language—and send it to Impact Public Schools by mail, email, or hand delivery. Make sure to keep a copy for your records.

Within 30 calendar days, IPS will investigate your complaint and respond to you in writing. More information about your complaint options are online here: www.k12.wa.us/Equity/Complaints.aspx.

Please know that the school may not retaliate against you or your child for sharing concerns or filing a complaint.

Champions - After School Care

Impact Public Schools partners with an outside provider, Champions, to provide after school care at each of our school sites.

After School Care: Champions operates from Monday-Friday from school dismissal until 6:00 pm at each of our school sites. By providing extended-day learning environments, Champions supports families by ensuring kids have a reliable place to go at the end of the school day, and supports schools by continuing learning, development, and fun outside of the classroom.

Enroll in Champions After School Care:  While these after school programs take place in our buildings to support our families, Impact Public Schools does not operate these programs. Therefore, families must enroll directly with Champions to attend after school programs.

Learn more about the Champions at each of our school sites, including enrollment, schedules, costs, and available discounts below:

Homeless/McKinney Vento

Homeless Resources:

If your family does not have stable housing, your child can possibly receive help through a federal law called the McKinney-Vento Act.

McKinney-Vento eligible children have the right to:

  • receive a free, appropriate public education.
  • enroll in school immediately, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment.
  • enroll in school and attend classes while the school gathers needed documents.
  • enroll in the local school; or continue attending the school of origin (the school they attended when permanently housed or the school in which they were last enrolled), if that is your preference.
  • receive transportation to and from the school of origin, if you request this.
  • receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students, according to your children’s needs.

Resources:

  • National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE): NCHE can explain your child’s school rights and tell you how to contact the local liaison in your school district. The local liaison can help enroll your child in school and make sure that your child receives the help that he/she needs.
  • Impact Public Schools Homeless Liaisons:
